What a Realistic Kerala Itinerary Looks Like

Munnar, Thekkady, Alleppey and Kochi — but not at the pace most brochures promise.

Brochures promise Kerala in four nights. It is technically possible and almost always a mistake, because the whole point of Kerala is that nothing is rushed.

Give Munnar two nights. The drive from Kochi takes four to five hours, so arriving and immediately sightseeing means you see the tea hills at their worst, in the flat afternoon light. Stay two nights and you get a sunrise and a proper plantation walk.

Thekkady deserves one night, mostly for the Periyar boat safari and the spice gardens. Do not expect guaranteed tiger sightings — the boat trip is about the landscape and the birdlife.

Alleppey is the reason people come. One night on a houseboat, ideally a private one, with all meals cooked on board. Board by noon so you get the full afternoon on the water rather than arriving at dusk.

Finish with a night in Fort Kochi. The Chinese fishing nets, the synagogue in Jew Town, a Kathakali performance and the best coffee of the trip. It is a gentle place to end.

That is six nights, and it is a comfortable trip. Five works if you drop Thekkady. Four works only if you accept that you are doing a highlight reel rather than a holiday.

We build Kerala itineraries around short drives and slow mornings. Share your dates and we will send a draft.
