The Burj Khalifa is the photograph. The creek, the desert and the neighbourhoods are the trip.
Almost every first-time Dubai itinerary is the same: the mall, the tower, a desert safari, a dhow cruise. All four are good. But the city rewards a little more curiosity than that.
Start at the creek. Take an abra across for one dirham, walk the spice souk and the textile lanes, then go to the Al Fahidi historical neighbourhood. It is the oldest part of the city and it looks nothing like the rest of Dubai.
Alserkal Avenue in Al Quoz is a converted industrial district now full of galleries, roasteries and independent restaurants. Jumeirah's public beaches give you the Burj Al Arab view without a bill. And the Hatta mountains, ninety minutes inland, are a completely different landscape — kayaking, hiking and cooler air.
Food genuinely rewards research. The city has excellent Lebanese, South Indian and Emirati restaurants at very ordinary prices if you know where to look, and we share a current list with every traveller we book.
One timing note: between June and September, plan your day around the heat. Mornings and evenings outdoors, midday indoors. It makes the difference between a trip you enjoy and one you endure.
